Parish Council Meeting - January 8 In
working to complete Archbishop Chaput's In-Depth Evaluation of Parish
Life, the Parish Council at its meeting on January 8 reviewed the Parish
Surveys for A Parish Responsive to Others: Pastoral Outreach and Service for Justice as well as An Effectively Administered Parish: Leadership and Care of Facilities, Personnel and Finance.
After hearing The Word from Matthew 25: 35-40 and Corinthians 12: 7-11
the Council evaluated our level of outreach and service to others and
the various levels of leadership, the use of our structure, and the use
of our finances.
It was noted in A Parish Responsive to Others: Pastoral Outreach and Service for Justice
that here at Saint Dorothy we are not confronted with racial, ethnic,
and cultural issues to the extent that other parishes might be. We have a
wide spectrum of outreach programs that are under the direction of our
Parish Nurse Ministry and our Family to Family Ministry. In our school's
Religious Education Program, part of the curriculum students receive
deals with peace and justice.
In discussing An Effectively Administered Parish: Leadership and Care of Facilities, Personnel and Finances,
the Council noted that because of the staff and parishioner volunteers,
Father Murphy and Father Silcox are able to be attentive to their
pastoral responsibilities. Because of people who volunteer our outreach
programs and our fund raisers are successful, therefore, the Council
will be discussing ways in which to get more parishioners involved and
to keep those who do volunteer to continue volunteering. Our space is
adequate, at best, to engage in the education and formation of our
members. At times we must limit the number of people who can attend
programs like our Bible Study due to a lack of space. Father Murphy is
very open about Saint Dorothy's finances. As Father stated in his State
of the Dot's Address, we have no outstanding debt to either private
contractors or the Archdiocese. Father Murphy also noted to the Council
that our census of parish membership is as accurate as the information
that has been returned. One thing Saint Dorothy can not do is implement
the goals of an Area Pastoral Plan since, as of now, no Area Pastoral
Plan exists.
The Parish Council hopes to complete their work for
Archbishop Chaput at its next meeting on March 19. Once the surveys are
complete, the Council will begin to work on an Action Plan.
